Dove is a superb safari tent set on a working farm, offering a fantastic glamping experience in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It’s ideal for families who love the outdoors and are looking for a chance to recharge and reconnect with nature.
Inside, the tent has an open-plan living space with plenty of room for everyone to gather. The compact yet well-equipped fitted kitchen has everything you need, including hot running water, to prepare home-cooked meals, perhaps using some of the excellent local Welsh produce. The sitting and dining area centres around a cosy wood-burning stove, the perfect spot to curl up with a book or enjoy a competitive board game. With no Wi-Fi, it’s a wonderful opportunity to switch off screens and make the most of the off-grid experience. A blanket box filled with traditional Welsh blankets is provided, ideal for cooler evenings.
There is a choice of sleeping options, including a double room and a twin room, both with beautiful metal bedsteads and Egyptian cotton linen dressed with Welsh blankets to guarantee a peaceful night’s sleep. The third bedroom is a hidden cabin within the tent, reached via a small four-step ladder and accessed through two charming miniature doors. Nearby, the ‘Pitch Pod’ shower room includes a proper flushing toilet and hot and cold running water.
Outside, a large, covered porch at the front of the tent provides a picnic bench and shelter, while the fire pit invites you to try out your barbecuing skills or simply relax toasting marshmallows as the sun sets. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, including rare lesser horseshoe bats swooping past. For an added touch of luxury, a wood-fired hot tub offers the ultimate relaxation, allowing you to soak in the bubbles while enjoying lovely countryside views.
The owner, accompanied by his trusty border collie, is delighted to offer guests farm tours to meet the animals. This mixed farm includes arable land, suckler beef cattle, and sheep. Children will love helping to feed orphan lambs in spring, and everyone will enjoy wandering the farm, especially as a hard road runs through it, so wellies aren’t strictly necessary. In partnership with the Woodland Trust, hundreds of trees and hedges have been planted across the land, attracting a wide variety of birds including pheasants, red kites, and buzzards. There is also a pond where you might spot a heron hunting for fish, and guests are welcome to pick apples and pears from the orchards.
The nearby village of Talybont-on-Usk may be small, but it offers no shortage of things to do. Explore the canal, two rivers, reservoir, hills, and woodland, or pop into the village shop and café and the two welcoming pubs. The Brecon Beacons are famous for their waterfalls, and there are several stunning cascades close by. Alternatively, venture a little further to walk the Four Falls Trail, one of the park’s most popular routes, where four waterfalls on the Afon Mellte and Afon Hepste offer the chance to walk behind the rushing water or even enjoy a spot of wild swimming.
The Brecon Beacons is an adventure playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with miles of walking, cycling, and mountain-biking routes; windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding on the canals and lakes; and rock climbing and abseiling on sheltered crags, old quarries, and rocky escarpments. For a more leisurely day, take a steam-train ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway through lush woodland and past sparkling reservoirs, with spectacular views of the famous three peaks.
The historic market town of Brecon lies at the top of the park and has a mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings, a fascinating military heritage, a renowned jazz festival, and a magnificent 13th-century cathedral. You’ll also find plenty of independent shops and cafés, a glassworks, perfect for picking up a memento of your visit, and a warm Welsh welcome throughout.
